Do you want to know something that really gets me fired up as a sleep consultant and as a mother? It\u2019s when moms (either online or in real life) are talking about baby not sleeping, and I hear comments like this:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should just enjoy getting up to nurse all night \u2013 someday he\u2019ll be all grown up and you\u2019ll miss it.\u201d\u00a0 Or\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were the one who decided to have children. Did you REALLY think you\u2019d be getting a full night\u2019s sleep for the next few years?\u201d \u00a0Or my all-time favorite\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, you\u2019d better learn to live with it!\u201d<\/p>\n

In all of my years as a\u00a0sleep consultant, I’ve heard a lot of\u00a0myths about sleep training, some of wh\"fact<\/a>ich I would like to address today!\u00a0 Here are the top three myths about teaching your baby to sleep well:<\/p>\n

Myth #1: Your baby will not love you in the morning.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Really? Do you think that after just one night of changing your baby\u2019s sleep habits she won\u2019t love you anymore? Is that all it would take?<\/p>\n

Would all the cuddles you give her, all the food you provide, all the diapers and clean clothes she wears, all the playtimes and bath times, all the kisses and laughter be for nothing because of a few nights of protest?<\/p>\n

The truth is that making changes to anyone\u2019s sleep habits will always be met with some resistance. So yes, it is safe to assume that your baby is not going to happily accept the fact that you are no longer going to rock her on the exercise ball for an hour each and every night, but as long as you are a loving and attentive parent in the first place, the love will endure.<\/p>\n

In fact, most people find that once their baby is sleeping well, she\u2019s even happier and healthier than before!<\/p>\n

Myth #2: Sleep training means leaving your baby to \u201ccry it out.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n

First off, as a sleep consultant, I do not support the \u201ccry-it-out\u201d process.\u00a0 It\u2019s not the solution that I endorse.<\/p>\n

In fact, you can stay in your child\u2019s room with them the whole time \u2014 if that makes you feel more comfortable.<\/p>\n

The bottom line is that it\u2019s not the crying that gets a baby sleeping well. The crying is simply your baby\u2019s reaction to the change in his or her sleep habits, nothing more.<\/p>\n

In other words, your baby isn\u2019t crying because she\u2019s \u201cmad\u201d at you\u2026 or because you\u2019re being cruel. The only reason she\u2019s crying is because she\u2019s temporarily confused! I mean, you USED TO rock or nurse her to sleep every night\u2026 and now (for her own health) you\u2019re not doing that anymore, instead your trying another solution.<\/p>\n

And the great news is that your child\u2019s confusion usually only lasts a few days. Children adapt SO quickly that she\u2019ll soon figure out how to calmly get herself to sleep\u2026 and then everyone\u2019s happier!<\/p>\n

Myth #3: Sleep training is too stressful for babies.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

First off, there is no evidence that sleep training has any short term or long term psychological effects on children. So you can cross that off your list of things to worry about.<\/p>\n

As for those who say that a few nights of crying are \u201ctoo stressful?\u201d Well, I say you\u2019ve really got two choices:<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0Make some changes. This usually involves a few nights of your child crying at bedtime. After a few nights, most children start to learn how to fall asleep independently and the crying stops completely shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n

In this scenario, the total amount of \u201cstress\u201d felt by your child amounts to a few minutes of crying for a few nights.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0Do nothing. In this scenario, the parent continues to nurse \/ rock \/ bounce their child to sleep every night. The child wakes up 1 \u2013 10 times per night, and needs to be nursed \/ rocked \/ bounced back to sleep each time.<\/p>\n

In this scenario, both parent and child are subjected to months (or even years) of systematic sleep deprivation where neither ever gets enough consolidated sleep to wake up and feel rested or refreshed. If these poor sleep habits continue into the school years, there is evidence that it correlates with things like obesity and trouble focusing in class \u2013 both of which sound pretty stressful to me!<\/p>\n

So what sounds more harmful: A few nights of crying\u2026 or months\/years of depriving your child of a good nights\u2019 sleep?<\/p>\n

If one or more of these three myths have been holding you back from taking the simple steps needed to create long term, positive change for your child\u2019s sleep, I really hope I\u2019ve been able to change your mind.<\/p>\n

And \u2013 as always \u2013 I\u2019m here for you when you\u2019re ready to get started and find solutions to your baby\u2019s sleep issues.\u00a0 Afterall, a sleeping baby is happy baby!<\/p>\n
