As you know by now, I am a huge advocate for baby\u2019s sleep! LOL!\u00a0 In fact, I consider myself a bit obsessed with it.\u00a0 If a baby is cranky, I instantly think \u201cthat baby needs to sleep.\u201d\u00a0 My friends and family give me a hard time, because they think I choke everything up to be about baby’s sleep \u2013 but in all honesty, I am correct about 90 percent of the time.\u00a0 If a baby is well rested (and well fed), they don\u2019t need much else to be happy.<\/p>\n
I know it\u2019s exciting to take a baby out and about \u2013 but I\u2019ve said it before and I\u2019ll say it again \u2013 arrange your baby\u2019s outings around their sleep time.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s a perfect example of what I\u2019m talking about.\u00a0 I went to a baby\u2019s birthday party last weekend and the parents arranged the party SMACK in the middle of the baby\u2019s naptime.\u00a0 Uhhhmmm, really?!??<\/p>\n
Guess how much fun that birthday party was for the baby and the parents?\u00a0 Mom had to carry a cranky baby around all afternoon because the baby was clingy due to being overtired. \u00a0Of course, the baby was not willing to be held by anyone else \u2013 when a baby\u2019s not feeling well, they just want mommy (sorry dads but it\u2019s true).<\/p>\n
When it came time for cake and picture time, we got NO good pictures because the baby was definitely not interested in smiling for anyone.<\/p>\n
Mom tried to put the baby down for a nap but babies are smart! Who wants to sleep when there are guests and party fun?!? This baby was no exception, she was not going to miss out.<\/p>\n
Overall, Mom was busy with an overtired, clingy baby and Dad was busy with the party details such as food and cleaning up.<\/p>\n
I wonder who had fun at that party? Definitely not Mom, Dad or baby.<\/p>\n
So, as much as you think babies can just go with the flow<\/em>, they really can\u2019t.\u00a0 They need their sleep.\u00a0 Of course as your baby gets older (over two years of age) they will be more flexible and you may be able to push them out of their sleep comfort zones moreso but for now, please keep your baby\u2019s sleep schedules tight and HONOUR their sleep needs \u2013 even if it is their birthday! \u00a0You don\u2019t want the theme song to be \u201cit\u2019s my birthday and I\u2019ll cry if I want to\u201d (Lesley Gore song).<\/p>\n Here’s to sleeping well!<\/p>\n So, as much as you think babies can just go with the flow, they really can\u2019t.
